Maybe it isn't. The internet won't give me firm facts. In one place it's always the third Saturday of May (i.e. today), in another place it's next Saturday, but in most places nobody seems to have heard of it and nobody seems to be celebrating it.
So, because nobody seems to be celebrating it, here is a list of my favourite Europeans who are carrying some extra pounds (for some of them, I must confess this is debatable) I should also mention that for some countries, nobody famous is fat. Which is disappointing for me, but very satisfying for them.
Austria - it's Arnold 'the Tummynator' Schwarzenegger! Yes, he still counts even though he is an American citizen these days. And probably not all that fat.
Belgium - it's everybody's favourite sleuth, M. Hercule Poirot! Belgium is also famous for its chocolate so I am slightly surprised I couldn't find more fat Belgians.
France - the very real, not at all made up, Obelix from those jolly Roman times. If you won't accept him, then please consider the actor who played him, Gerard Depardieu, as a late substitute.
Greece - it's world renowned and not made up singer, Demis Roussos, most famous these days for his appearance in 'Abigail's Party'.
Italy - too many singers and too many men in this line up so far, but I would not be so rude as to bring up the weight of any lovely real ladies and I can't find anyone who isn't a singer so I give you the amazing and talented Italian songbird, Bianca Castafiore!
And that is it. Spain, Portugal, Norway, all you other countries - if you want to be in my favourite European celebrity list next year you'd better start eating. Germany - I'm really sorry, but all of your entries that I could think of were from wartime and it didn't seem appropriate.
Happy European Obesity Day to everybody out there!
