Whilst the obvious and clichéd counter-argument is that if I do eat it, it will all go to waist, I decided that I would adopt several strategies to try to mitigate against this potential disaster.
(1) I bought new trousers, 36 inch waist, and I wore these last night. They are snug, in fact it feels like the bad old days when my 44 inch trousers were snug. The snugness that says to you, ‘You are mighty fat, my friend, you might want to eat less.’ The theory, then, was that my trousers would get tighter if I ate too much and thereby discourage me from eating too much.
(2) I went to the gym and ran 5km. On the way to the gym I attempted to calculate how fast I would have to run in order to run 5km in 35 minutes. I know this sounds like an arbitrary time, but on the couch-2-5k app I have on my phone, the final day is running 5km in 35 minutes. I never achieved this – I ran/ambled quickly for 35 minutes but I don’t believe I actually managed the 5km thing. But I am determined to do so. So calculation (which I have previously got wrong on account of not remembering the correct quantities of 5 minutes that there are in 60 minutes) was performed as I walked down to the gym and then I entered the appropriate figures into the treadmill… and almost immediately flailed wildly and flew off the back of the treadmill because I hadn’t changed the units from miles to km, and 8 and a bit miles per hour is a whole heck of a lot more than 8 and a bit km per hour. And even 8 and a bit km per hour was more than I could really manage, so in the end I managed this…
(4) When I got back from the gym and had a shower, I weighed myself to see what my starting point for the evening was. I was 15 stone and 10lbs. So I could reasonably eat 3lbs worth of food and I would still be the same weight as last time. What does 3lbs of food look like?
That’s actually a lot more than I was expecting! But then there was going to be food which probably wasn’t going to be low fat yoghurt, raw carrots, chicken breast (without skin) and fruit. Yes, there was probably going to be chocolate and pudding and wine and perhaps a little glass of port. But, all the same, if the whole lot didn’t weigh more than 3lbs then I couldn’t put on more than 3 lbs. I think the whole lot did weigh more than 3lbs by the way.
So how did these strategies work out?
