Just over a year ago I joined the local gym. When I say local, we are talking a 250m walk from my front door. It could not be more convenient. Somebody who joined a gym that was so easily accessible would be a total idiot if he didn't utilise the facilities pretty much every day.
Hello, my name is Andy and I am a total idiot.
It started off well, why wouldn't it? I started my membership in the middle of the year, not in a guilt-induced fug of despondency on New Years Day. I was going places! And for a few months it worked. I was going three times a week at least and only getting a little annoyed by the other idiots/ gym members.
And then it all sort of tailed off. I went a few times at the beginning of my sponsored weight loss (did I mention that I am doing this to support both the PDSA and Shelter and you can still guilt trip me into losing my weight by giving either of them some money?) and then for about a month and a half, nothing...
I don't know why. Partly I would like to blame my tensor fasciitis. It improved so much in my first flush of weight loss but then it flared up again when I started trying running. Maybe it was too much too soon? Maybe this is just a massive cop out.
About three weeks ago I realised that my membership at the gym was due to expire. Tuesday next week is the last day. So since we got back from Suffolk I've been exercising like crazy. And watching a lot of Dr Who whilst exercising.
But is it enough? Should I renew my membership? Or should I use the wide open spaces of the local park (approx 10m further than the gym and, uh, free)?
What to do?
