I lived outside the catchment area of the grammar school I went to. As a result I did not get a free bus pass and so my mum and dad gave me money every day for the bus.
I didn't get the bus in the morning because a friend of the family have me a lift. If I was lucky she would give me a lift home in the afternoon as well. As a result I often spent my bus money on sweets from the tuck shop, or from Sweaty Betty's corner shop. I have no idea whether Betty really was sweaty or even if her name was Betty. I'm guessing she was a larger lady and we were horrible school boys.
So I bought a lot of sweets and got fatter.
And every so often my lift was late and I would worry that I had been forgotten. And I would wish that I had not spent the money on sweets, or that I had the foresight to keep a reserve of cash.
But I knew nothing of deferred pleasures, and so I just got fat.
