I love Bake Off! And of course Andy is in training (read his exploits on his baking blog 'Return of the Living Bread') because he intends to apply for the programme's 2015 series but he won't get very far if he doesn't know that in order to stop your cherries plummeting to the bottom of your cake you have to wash them first, cut them into quarters and then dust 'em in flour.
The biggest problem, though, is that in conjunction with Bake Off training, Andy is also doing a year long sponsored slim for the PDSA and Shelter. He has already lost well over two stones. Isn't that marvellous? What do you mean you haven't sponsored him yet? Tut tut.
Anyway, I have been supporting Andy in his weight loss efforts because one should always stand by one's man in these things and not taunt them by sitting on the sofa eating doughnuts and chips, and thus I have lost almost, but not quite, a stone.
Until we went on holiday last week. On returning, we both discovered (surprise, surprise, who'd have thought it,eh?) that we had gained a little weight. Not too much because we both made an effort to hold back and to be active, but the scales, if not mocking, were marginally reproving.
But were we downhearted? Of course we were, for five minutes, and then we were stern and said,'But holiday weight always goes quickly once you get back on track. This time next week we shall be laughing if we get back on the straight and narrow NOW!'
And what was Andy doing within two hours of our return from holiday yesterday? He was making flipping macaroons, that's what he was doing! Because the Bake Off training must not stop for anything, even holiday weight gain and a year long sponsored slim. And today he has been making Florentines! Chocolate Florentines. Sigh...
I have had to be VERY iron-willed, I can tell you. I have been doing aerobic ironing and avoiding the nut jar. I love my nut jar. God, I LOVE nuts...why are they soooooo yummy and yet sooooo high in calories. Why aren't squirrels little furry porkers? They eat nuts. All the time. Oh yes, and they also run about like loons and climb trees and take rides on bird feeder twirlers which probably negates some of the nut calorie content. (Pop over to Jessica's blog at rustyduck.net for a very entertaining squirrel video! I bet those squirrels used up thousands of calories!)
Anyway, I have drunk lots of water and been very virtuous today. I am back on track! Despite the chocolate Florentines...
